Precipitation forecast using neural networks

Meteocentre provides current radar images at the highest possible update frequency. Current radar images and supplementary meteorological data feed into our proprietary neural-network model, which predicts the near-term development of precipitation—where a new shower will form, where a storm will move and where rain will weaken.

Unlike older optical-flow methods that merely shift existing precipitation, our latest model also captures the formation and dissipation of precipitation cells and handles local terrain effects more effectively. This gives you a highly reliable forecast of rain and approaching storms for your location.

Weather Radar and Rain Detection

Weather radar images show the current and predicted development of precipitation (steady rain, storms, showers, and snowfall) on the map. Estimated precipitation amounts are differentiated by colors. Radar precipitation detection occurs every 10 minutes, and the images are subsequently available online, including the latest forecast.

Current precipitation and storms are measured by national weather services. A weather radar operates on the principle of backscattering of microwaves reflected from precipitation. Estimated precipitation intensity is calculated based on the strength of reflection - storms and heavy rain appear in red on radar images.
