How to read a synoptic chart
Black isobars connect places with equal air pressure. Letters indicate high and low pressure systems, while coloured lines mark weather fronts. Blue indicates a cold front, red a warm front and purple an occluded front. On forecast charts, the background colours show air temperature at a height of 2 metres.
Forecast charts show the expected weather over the North Atlantic and Europe up to 108 hours ahead. The valid time is also printed at the bottom of each chart.
